Writing using shorter paragraphs is easier on the eye
Which is better, and easier to read? If you can get past this long boring and big paragraph, well done! This one that I’m writing right now is longer than the others I’m going to write after it. I might even include roughly the same amount of words in all the paragraphs below this one (all totalling up to the same as the amount of words in just this one), but they will be separate; apart. Once you’ve finished reading this page, decide which was easier to read – this long boring one, or the shorter ones beneath it. Of course, perhaps I should also include a photograph somewhere below, between the lower paragraphs, to break it up further, and to add more interest, and so that the eyes get more … Read entire article »

What does our web address 1pic4twenty.co.za mean?
Go to our main website homepage here. (you can email us from that page too) 1pic4twenty was, at first, the name we gave our first idea of a business – which related to somebody sending a digital photograph to us, and us sending 20 of the same photograph back – but different, as in various different forms of the same photograph eg in black and white, sepia, with a “frame”, red-eye removed, or applying photoshop filters that would mean the photo would appear as an oil pastel, or watercolour, or have a posterised effect. Also cropping so that more than one photo could be made from the same image, altering the colour tone, and basically doing fun things with one image. These new photographs could then be emailed … Read entire article »

How to avoid copyright problems and write using your own words
It’s expected at primary school level already. When children do projects or write information down for orals based on information retrieved from other sources such as books, magazines or websites, they are told to “write it in your own words.” For people who bother to take the time to do this properly, it can be frustrating and a lengthy process, but is best if they want to avoid any copyright infringement if the original author comes across identical work somewhere, especially if the original author sees no mention of his or her name on the new, but identical document. Another reason to write new work in your own words is manners. Be polite. Somebody worked hard, or had already taken the time to learn about a subject, to write about it. How … Read entire article »

A Ride on a Rag
A Ride on a Rag – a short story by my 11 year old son, Basti, who has quite an imagination, and enjoys reading and writing. A Ride on a Rag Creak! “That was close” I thought, as the door creaked again. To think that I had got this close and then to be betrayed by an old door creaking. Yesterday when I was supposed to be watering my mother’s flowers, an old man with bad teeth and a smile that sent shivers down my spine came to our gate. He held out a stiff, dirty carpet. I wasn’t sure if I should take it, but he told me to. He told me that it would take me to faraway places, ancient places, magical places. I took it, my hands shaking, and went … Read entire article »
