Clever way to use our free 3 page web design special if you already have a website
One of our existing clients Lovedogs is using the free 3 page web design special is a clever way. Just for registering a new domain with us, and hosting a site, she will get her new free 3 page website. It will have links on it to her existing site, and, of course, 3 pages of content for search engines to find. So, even though this is a seperate website, it’s basically like adding 3 pages of content to a site, at only the price of a .co.za domain registration and hosting (R120 plus R360) (renewable yearly.) It also provides a domain name for search engines to find, that is similar to her existing site’s domain name. Further exposure! The client can of course always have … Read entire article »

Bells and Whistles on a website
One particular issue we have, on an almost daily basis, is a clients’ irrepressible urge to incorporate bling into their website. Maybe it’s because they never had toys as children, but it never fails to amaze us to what lengths these people will go to create the fugliest site to ever grace any computer monitor. Our brochure website design service revolves primarily around custom design, and incorporating the clients’ wishes within the framework we create. We obviously do advise our clients on what should be where, and what needs to be said, and where exactly it needs to be placed. Most of the time our clients will take our advice. Our track record for Search Engine findability, coupled with design creativity is, even if we say so ourselves, pretty good. Then we have our … Read entire article »

How and where can I check the stats of my website or blog?
If you’re curious to know stats about your blog or website, even though you’re selling enough products, getting lots of blog comments or being hired for your services (you might just be curious, instead of looking at ways you can improve the findability of your site or blog), here are some of the things we do to check our own stats: One of the main ways we check our stats is by having access to the control panel of our sites , through the hosting package we have – most website hosts will give you the details to access your control panel, but will often warn you not to fiddle with anything else there, for fear of messing up your site looks and functions (if designed by somebody other than yourself.) … Read entire article »

Monetizing your website or blog
There is no perfect solution to every problem. There is no perfect answer to every question. As a website or blog owner, you need to know one thing, and that is that a lot of your website visitor’s will not find what they are looking for on your website, and that they will leave your website to find the information they are looking for somewhere else. Prepare for this. We use adverts on some of our sites from several sources. We use mainly:Google AdsenseAmazon.comClickbank, andOfferforge. Google place content related adverts (Adsense for content) on your website and you can choose the ads that the other ad networks display on your website. Displaying ads on your website is a service to your visitors, as you are providing them with a channel they can use to find the information … Read entire article »

Website Blues
Why oh why….? Do website designers make surfers cry? Is it only in South Africa that the entire population of the country does not have access to a High Speed internet connection? I’m not familiar with international internet access stats, so will stay away from the international scene. Here in South Africa about 60% of the population has internet access. About 80% of them have to rely on their mobile phones to connect to the world. Of the remainder, more than 75% have to rely on a 56k dial-up connection. Now. As a website designer who, by my own choice, works strictly within my local market, in order to provide a custom service, I am regularly asked to quote against other designers for a particular job. Without exception, all my clients want is a basic … Read entire article »

What kind of a website should I get?
Oh, are there different kinds? Isn’t a website just a website? What is it that you want your website to do for you and your business? Answering that is the place to begin when deciding on what kind of website you want and need, and before you contact a web designer – or, at least have a rough idea of what you want – and your web designer will be able to tell you what kind of website will best suit your needs, and be able to give you a quote of some sort, or give you links to the appropriate pages that list prices. Here are a few of the basic different kinds of websites: A basic html static website:A static html website is basically just an informative website, displaying what your … Read entire article »

Why should I get a website?
This article is about why you should get a website, or the advantages and disadvantages of having a website, and NOT about how your website is going to be found or how you are going to market it, once you have one – that’s a different article that you can read about here: How are people going to find my website? I’m going to describe the advantages and disadvantages related to getting a static html website designed. (You may also want to read about what different kinds of websites there are.) A static html website is a website that has pages that merely give information, and possibly have a contact form, or accommodation booking form, perhaps a couple of photos, perhaps even a slideshow of photos, something moving slightly to draw … Read entire article »

How are people going to find my website?
A business or information website exists NOT to be miraculously and easily found on page one of Google search results, but exists as a portal to, and an advertisement of, your business. Regards advertising your site, that’s up to you. If having your website designed by us, we do a bit of basicorganic search engine optimization included in the price, and usuallydo a pretty good job of this, but this does not guarantee page one ortwo Google results when people are searching for a business like yourson the Internet (unless they’re using the name of your businessspecifically.) You could always use PPC (we don’t use it ourselves though, and don’t offer it as a service) through hiring a professional (and usually quite expensive) searchengine optimization specialist, or you can try get the … Read entire article »

SEO People Who Promise Or Guarantee You That Your Website Will Be Found on Page 1 of Google
Three people approach a Search Engine Optimization specialist, and ask the SEO specialist if he can get their websites found on page one of Google for a specific search term or word. The specialist says yes, he guarantees it. In the meantime, during that same week, one hundred website owners with the same wish approach other SEO specialists who all guarantee the same thing. These website owners are all upset when they don’t get the results they wanted, and paid for. Some of those 103 website owners may get what they wanted and paid for, and be very happy, but it will never be more than ten that appear on the first page of Google search results! There is only room on page 1 for ten results! Also, even if you make page … Read entire article »

We’re currently no.1 on Google.co.za for web design!
Four days ago, (15 August 2009), we decided to check how we were doing on Google.co.za for the search phrase “web design.” And there we were, at no.3! We checked again the next day and we’d moved up to no.1! Out of over 300 million results! We’re not sure when last we checked, probably at least a month ago, when we weren’t even on the first ten pages. A month ago or so, we were there for other search terms, on page one, but longer ones such as “web design photography writing” – or see which others too, on our blog post Reasons why leaving a comment on our blog might be good for you, but not just for two words being two words we’ve been striving to be found for! We’re really pleased! But also … Read entire article »

How long do we take to design your website?
Of the 20 websites we have designed since February 2008 to now (July 2009) , only two of them took as little as 9 days from beginning to end – beginning being first consultation with the web design client, and end being uploaded and available for viewing by the world. There are only two of us, myself, owner of the web design, photography, and writing business, in East London, South Africa, and Tony who helps me. All the websites we have designed for other clients have taken longer than 9 days, some as long as 5 to 6 weeks. This is not usually our fault, and we find that clients don’t mind if it takes a bit long to finish a design, when they understand we get to certain points in the … Read entire article »

What do you Require to have a Website?
To have a website, you will need: A website host; and A registered website (Domain). Your website host provides ongoing website viewing availability for your visitors. Your site host will keep your website on their servers, and make it available to everyone browsing the Internet. For this service you will pay a fee, which is dependant on your traffic requirements. Traffic is how much information is passed from the server to the website visitor, which happens every time somebody visits your site, so if you’re expecting a lot of traffic, make sure your server provides enough bandwidth. Some hosts will give you a free website, which is supported by advertisements, which will be visible on the pages of your website. This is fine if you don’t mind possible opposition to your business having an advertisement on … Read entire article »
