Free advertising for East London and South Africa

Shopping for free advertising? We are now offering free advertising on three of our blogs – East London in SA, and School and Stuff and Online Flea Market. These blogs are fairly new, but are sure to grow just like our other older sites and blogs have, and the advertising we offer is generous, and FREE! Our main 1pic4twenty blog, according to the South African blog aggregator myScoop is already receiving over 2000 page views per week – this is real visitors viewing the pages – the figure is considerably larger if including Search Engine robots. Be careful when paying for advertising on some sites that the amount of page views they say they are getting does not include Search Engine robots (robots are not going to read your ad and like … Read entire article »

Remembering my grade 2 school year in East London in 1976

In 1976 in East London, Vincent Park Primary School (see Remembering my grade 1 school year) moved to where Hudson Park Primary School is now. I was in grade 2 (sub B) and turned 7 that year. Read about the history of the different schools (Vincent Primary school, Clifton Primary school, and The Convent of the Sacred Heart) becoming what is today Hudson Park primary and high school. My memories of grade 2, and the year 1976, are not all that clear. I remember grade 1 and 1975 more. What I do remember, though, about grade 2 at Vincent Park Primary school, on the new premises, is all the trees and spacious grounds. It was a little tomboy’s dream come true. A school with grounds where all sorts of adventures could be invented, … Read entire article »

2010 World Cup football in South Africa and the school holidays

Any other people out there who don’t really enjoy football – or soccer, as many of us here in South Africa call it, and who aren’t too concerned with watching the 2010 world cup in the various cities in South Africa when it all gets under way? Are there other people, especially parents of kids still in our South African schools, out there who would rather have had their school children enjoy their usual six week school holidays than watch the 2010 world cup? Why shorten the school holidays over the festive season of December and January just so that the usual middle of the year winter holiday of three weeks can be extended to five weeks? Why? Because of the world cup. Hm! So, are all our South African school kids and … Read entire article »

Remembering my grade 1 school year in East London in 1975

I turned 6 toward the middle of my first year at “big school” in 1975 in East London. Back in those days grade 1 was called Sub A. I spent that year at Vincent Park Primary in Western Avenue, in Vincent, before the school moved premises in 1976 to where Hudson Park Primary is now. My parents, brother and I also lived in Western Ave at the time. In fact, my parents moved from Western Avenue only a few years ago. My brother was in standard 9 (grade 11) at Cambridge High School. I remember trying on my school uniform for the first time a few days before school started. I was terribly excited to be going to “big school” for the first time, and very proud of my maroon uniform and my black … Read entire article »

Tips for presenting a school poster project that displays good layout

Tips for presenting a school poster project that displays good layout You’ve done all the research, have chosen which pictures you’re going to draw, cut out or colour in, and now have to do the writing or typing, and get ready to paste everything on your poster for display. Be sure to first assess what size the poster is that you’re going to display the pictures and information on. An A3 size poster is not that large, so be careful not to prepare pictures that are too large, which would leave very little space over for writing. Don’t forget to leave space for the heading, bibliography, and your name and grade too. Use an A4 sheet of paper to roughly plan the layout. Sketch squares or rectangles representing the different sections of the poster … Read entire article »

How to help your child cope with doing a school project on his own

Don’t you get tired of helping your child get his written project completed in time, and not just completed in time, but making sure that the project is actually good too? School projects can be a pain, and what all parents dread, but it doesn’t have to be so stressful. You may have to help your child through his first few school projects, but there is no reason to keep on helping him if you use a plan that can be applied to all written projects, no matter what the topic is. A good plan will reduce stress for the parent and free up time for the parent, will help the child learn how to cope with doing a project with no help from his mother or father at all, and will … Read entire article »

School homework is stressful for parents and children

Homework time can be a dreadful time for everybody in a family. As a parent, do you sometimes find yourself breathing a sigh of relief when school homework for the night is done, and the kids are tucked up for a good night’s rest – that could have been a longer rest had they finished their school work earlier? As you relax, you suddenly realise how tense your shoulders and neck were during the session of homework your child was doing, and how sore your body still feels. You are exhausted. You are not alone. Children should not be getting stressed over homework, but they are. There’s so much that they have to hand in on certain dates, and it often feels that they are never given enough notice, but that … Read entire article »

Children at school are getting so much homework!

Even primary school children are getting plenty of homework. I can only expect the amount of homework that school children receive to increase even more in high school. My sons are aged 10 and 11 and go to a public school in East London, South Africa. The amount of homework they are receiving in this fourth school term is unbelievable. It has also been quite a lot in the second term, but generally the first and third terms are a little easier on the parents and children, and I suspect on the teachers too. I wish the amount of projects and orals that are expected to be handed in or delivered over a year could be spread out a little more, but understanding that teachers follow a certain curriculum, and cannot hand … Read entire article »

Out of boys and girls, who writes more?

My 10 year old son, Zooty, has needed a new pen for school since the day before yesterday. I completely forgot to get him one yesterday, but luckily he didn’t need one at school today as he had an adventure day where he ran, cycled, and swam in a dam, and didn’t do any writing! I remembered to get him a pen today, but only at the last minute. Tony and I were in the shop and had already paid for my two boys’ juices and snack we would be giving them when we collected them from school. We were running a little late as had to get them home quickly to shower and get ready for a music evening where they would be playing recorder with loads of other children … Read entire article »

You’re worried about your children not finding work when they leave school

The information in this article below can be used by anyone wanting to earn an income from home, not just teenagers struggling to find work once finished school (or their parents trying to help them.) Just about anyone can earn a fairly decent income from home if they just put in a bit of time and effort, and if they don’t give up. Although some parents might want to keep their babies at home forever, they do also want to help in any way they can to get their children self supportive. There are many concerns regarding your child finding work after leaving school. You don’t have money for further studies, and, anyway, your child is not really an outgoing person. Will they really fit into the working world out there? They’re … Read entire article »

Swine Flu in East London South Africa causes many children to miss school

The local newspaper in East London, the Daily Dispatch, has a blog and I’ve left a comment on an excellent post there, regarding my own children’s experience with swine flu, at this link: Read the Daily Dispatch blog post about Swine Flu and how it is affecting the schools and children in East London. There are many comments from troubled parents in East London as well as their views on swine flu and on the anti viral drug treatment tamiflu. It seems most people are steering clear of tamiflu, and opting for familiar flu and bronchitis antibiotics instead. Some people are convinced swine flu is a scam of some sort, but whether it is or not, it’s still concerning that so many people have flu symptoms in East London – and all … Read entire article »
