Free advertising for East London and South Africa

Shopping for free advertising? We are now offering free advertising on three of our blogs – East London in SA, and School and Stuff and Online Flea Market. These blogs are fairly new, but are sure to grow just like our other older sites and blogs have, and the advertising we offer is generous, and FREE! Our main 1pic4twenty blog, according to the South African blog aggregator myScoop is already receiving over 2000 page views per week – this is real visitors viewing the pages – the figure is considerably larger if including Search Engine robots. Be careful when paying for advertising on some sites that the amount of page views they say they are getting does not include Search Engine robots (robots are not going to read your ad and like … Read entire article »

The riddle of how it seemed to rain on just our verandah

It’s really odd. We can’t figure out how the verandah got wet, as well as how the steps leading off it got wet, and part of the paving in front of the garage and carport. Really odd. It has not rained anywhere else – not in the rest of the garden, not in the street, not in the neighbours’ gardens, nowhere else. So, was it rain, or something else? Nobody washed the verandah. Nothing seems to be wet in the neighbours gardens (maybe their hosepipe went a little astray – that’s if they were using a hosepipe, as due to the water restrictions in the Amathole District (including East London), using a hosepipe is not permitted right now), but this doesn’t seem to be so either. The water did … Read entire article »

2010 Water restrictions in East London South Africa

Did you even know there was a drought and that the water (or lack of it) is a pretty serious situation in the entire Amathole District? Did you know that water restrictions in the Amathole District (including East London) were implemented on the 1st of May 2010? Or are the signs that should be all over the streets hidden by signs and flags representing the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa? One of the things that we do while waiting for the boys to finish their art lesson on Friday afternoons is read some local free papers we pick up at a nearby shop. One such paper is the Eastern Cape Today (EC Today) and we applaud them for mentioning the drought problem, and listing all the things that … Read entire article »

A visit to the Gonubie Agricultural Show in East London

A visit to the Gonubie Agricultural Show in East London

So, Tony, the boys and I set out today to visit the Gonubie Agricultural Show, at the Gonubie Farmers Hall grounds, near the Brakfontein turnoff, just outside East London. We stayed for three hours, and had loads of fun. For starters we had to get Basti a new pair of shoes as we discovered just before we left that he had lost his sandals – possibly at the karate tournament on Saturday. So, after parking on … Read entire article »

11 days smoking e cigarettes lung buddy in East London

Ok, so we smoke. We smoke 40 cigarettes a day. We smoked 40 cigarettes a day. Now we smoke one cigarette per day. All day. We smoke an electronic cigarette called lung buddy and we’ve been using lung buddy for our nicotine fix for 11 days now. Why did we change to smoking electronic cigarettes? We had seen e cigarettes mentioned here and there, but had never actually seen one in a shop or being smoked by another person – then a friend was smoking one and showed it to us and let us try it. We found out a little more about e-cigarettes, and were impressed at how much healthier they are than smoking paper cigarettes, and somewhat cheaper too, and bought a lung buddy at the Gonubie Spar, in Gonubie, East … Read entire article »

Remembering my grade 1 school year in East London in 1975

I turned 6 toward the middle of my first year at “big school” in 1975 in East London. Back in those days grade 1 was called Sub A. I spent that year at Vincent Park Primary in Western Avenue, in Vincent, before the school moved premises in 1976 to where Hudson Park Primary is now. My parents, brother and I also lived in Western Ave at the time. In fact, my parents moved from Western Avenue only a few years ago. My brother was in standard 9 (grade 11) at Cambridge High School. I remember trying on my school uniform for the first time a few days before school started. I was terribly excited to be going to “big school” for the first time, and very proud of my maroon uniform and my black … Read entire article »

Children at school are getting so much homework!

Even primary school children are getting plenty of homework. I can only expect the amount of homework that school children receive to increase even more in high school. My sons are aged 10 and 11 and go to a public school in East London, South Africa. The amount of homework they are receiving in this fourth school term is unbelievable. It has also been quite a lot in the second term, but generally the first and third terms are a little easier on the parents and children, and I suspect on the teachers too. I wish the amount of projects and orals that are expected to be handed in or delivered over a year could be spread out a little more, but understanding that teachers follow a certain curriculum, and cannot hand … Read entire article »

Signs and traffic on the N2 near Hemingways

What a pain! I hope the opening of the new Hemingways shopping complex sorts everything out, and life can get back to normal – other than being excited about the first few visits to the new Hemingways shopping complex. There have been various incidents I myself have noticed that I’m sure others have noticed too. Perhaps some people have noticed even more problems than I have. When stuck on a hill in slow-moving traffic half way between the Hemingways/Western Ave offramp and the Abbotsford offramp, people come speeding around a bend and try and push in because they’ve missed realising they need to slow down to get into the queue of slow traffic on the left – or perhaps some do realise and are just pushing their luck. Those that have behaved … Read entire article »

How to make money from taking photographs for accommodation establishments

How to make money from taking photographs for accommodation establishments

There are an amazing amount of accommodation establishments all over the world. I take photographs for accommodation establishments in East London, South Africa It’s not that difficult taking photographs for b&b’s, self catering and guest house establishments. I use just a small 5meg digital camera.   Marketing your photographic service is where the hardest work comes in, but if you’re serious about making some money, even if just part time, from taking photos of bedrooms, bathrooms, conference facilities, … Read entire article »

The 2008 Surfers Marathon in East London was my 13th Surfers Marathon

Are you thinking of running the Surfer’s Marathon? See some 2010 Surfers Marathon photos here How far is the Surfer’s Marathon coastal challenge in East London? The distance of the Surfer’s Marathon is 16 km. The entire 16 kilometres is not all on sand, but for most runners it just about feels like it! About two thirds of the race sees runners and walkers shuffling over soft sand and slippery wobbly rocks, and crossing two rivers – the Gonubie River, and the Nahoon River. Where does the Surfer’s Marathon start? The Surfers Marathon starts at Kwelera Mouth. Take a right at Crossways, at The Village Centre, on the East Coast Resorts Road, then just stay on that road down to the coast. Can I park my car at the start of the Surfer’s Marathon? The Surfers Marathon does … Read entire article »
