The importance of using good grammar in comments

Why is it important to try use at least fairly good grammar when making comments on blog posts? Exposure exposure exposure! It is not at all selfish to try and get some exposure for yourself when leaving comments on the blog posts of other people. If you leave a decent comment for another person, and especially if that comment is fairly lengthy, you are not only helping that person (who wrote the blog post) gain more exposure, but are gaining more exposure yourself too. Your profile link is displayed, or a link to your own website or blog. How many words – or particular words – you use in the actual comment, or how you say what you want to say, can draw further attention, to both the blog post and yourself. Words in comments … Read entire article »

Free advertising for East London and South Africa

Shopping for free advertising? We are now offering free advertising on three of our blogs – East London in SA, and School and Stuff and Online Flea Market. These blogs are fairly new, but are sure to grow just like our other older sites and blogs have, and the advertising we offer is generous, and FREE! Our main 1pic4twenty blog, according to the South African blog aggregator myScoop is already receiving over 2000 page views per week – this is real visitors viewing the pages – the figure is considerably larger if including Search Engine robots. Be careful when paying for advertising on some sites that the amount of page views they say they are getting does not include Search Engine robots (robots are not going to read your ad and like … Read entire article »

How Google Adsense can help my kids with their future

My boys are 11 and 12 now, and there’s not much money, in general, and especially not enough to take better care of the boys and provide for them as much as I would like to. In fact, right now, Tony and I are seriously broke. February this year (2010) was the best month we’ve had since we started our little business in Feb 2008, and we got pretty excited, then work just started to, like, not come in as quickly before. We have not yet fully paid my parents (where we live) for rent this month, and are also then obviously nowhere near paying back the boys for having used some of their leftover birthday monies that we have used just for everyday necessities. We have at least paid our telephone … Read entire article »

Can’t all you spammers at least get a little more creative?

To all you spammers out there: Get your own blog and then read through the spam you have to moderate. Notice anything FAMILIAR? There will be TONS familiar! You think you’re so clever with your little spam comments that you hope will pass moderation? Well, think again. There’s thousands others leaving very similar comments to you! Do you all go to the same spamming school? Let’s learn to spam. Yippee. Well, get yourself another teacher. Be a little creative, at least, if you can’t manage to at least read the blog post and post a RELEVANT comment. At least entertain me a little, and I may just allow your comment through (if the site your link leads to is in good taste), but please, stop writing … Read entire article »

How and where can I check the stats of my website or blog?

If you’re curious to know stats about your blog or website, even though you’re selling enough products, getting lots of blog comments or being hired for your services (you might just be curious, instead of looking at ways you can improve the findability of your site or blog), here are some of the things we do to check our own stats: One of the main ways we check our stats is by having access to the control panel of our sites , through the hosting package we have – most website hosts will give you the details to access your control panel, but will often warn you not to fiddle with anything else there, for fear of messing up your site looks and functions (if designed by somebody other than yourself.) … Read entire article »

ABSOLUTE beginner struggling to make sense of free WordPress lessons?

Tony’s free WordPress lessons for absolute beginners. Not too long ago we were WordPress beginners too, and understand how it feels trying to make sense of free WordPress lessons, or even step by step tutorials. Free WordPress lessons are all fine and dandy, but, still, not that easy for an ABSOLUTE beginner to understand! What we found, and what we have also found with our clients, is that people are in just too much of a hurry to learn how to use WordPress, and start posting to their new blog! It’s true, it’s terribly exciting to have one’s own WordPress blog, and you want to see your posts there as soon as possible; you want to start giving friends the link to your new blog; you want strangers to visit your blog, learn … Read entire article »

To allow blog comments or not to allow blog comments

Is it best to allow blog comments on one’s blog, or not to allow them? I think it depends on what the main purpose of your blog is. Why do you have a blog? Is it merely as extra content, in the form of informative articles, that search engines can find, to help you have more people finding out about products you sell or services you offer – on either your blog or on a main business website that the blog links to? Is your blog merely used as a diary for yourself, that you may sometimes let friends and family have the link to, to see what you’ve been up to lately? Is your blog for forming new aquaintances or making new friends, and for networking? Do you have ads like Google adsense … Read entire article »

Monetizing your website or blog

There is no perfect solution to every problem. There is no perfect answer to every question. As a website or blog owner, you need to know one thing, and that is that a lot of your website visitor’s will not find what they are looking for on your website, and that they will leave your website to find the information they are looking for somewhere else. Prepare for this. We use adverts on some of our sites from several sources. We use mainly:Google AdsenseAmazon.comClickbank, andOfferforge. Google place content related adverts (Adsense for content) on your website and you can choose the ads that the other ad networks display on your website. Displaying ads on your website is a service to your visitors, as you are providing them with a channel they can use to find the information … Read entire article »

Other ways to beat writer’s block and write for SEO

I have already written a post on our Work at Home Jobs blog entitled To make money blogging, what should you blog about? but I left out a few things. Even with the list of ideas I gave (on the blog post I link to above) to help people find toipics to write about, one might still need to come up with more topics. So, where does one find these topics? And when one is also trying to optimize one’s articles for SEO (Search Engine Optimization), where can one find ideas about what to write about? Well, go onto Google, and type just about anything into the search bar – although preferably related to something you know a bit about already, or at least interests you quite a lot. Type just the … Read entire article »

Impressed with our new free Wordpress.org blog theme

For a free Wordpress.org theme, we’re really happy with the “Cover” theme we are now using on two of our sites: Clay Brick, and Work at Home Jobs. The free WP Cover theme is by One Designs We are still using another free Wordpress.org theme on this TnT Unleashed 1pic4twenty blog, called Blend, and, although we’ve been happy with it, and it has served us really well, we are considering changing it to the Cover theme too. Would first like to make a few changes to this blog, though, before moving, and this blog has the most posts, so far, of all our sites, I think, so not quite yet, but will get a Round Tuit. UPDATE:  WE DID GET THAT ROUND TUIT, AS HAVE SINCE CHANGED THIS BLOG THEME TO THE … Read entire article »

Wordpress blog hosting service and other news from TnT

Well, so many people, these days, want their own Wordpress blog, hosted on their own server space, but that’s where it ends, just wanting and dreaming, as they’re not sure what to do next - so we at TnT in East London, South Africa, have decided to offer a new service (an additional service to our other services) where we steer people to view FREE Wordpress blog themes (templates) (the look of your blog), for example at WordPress themes or to use the WordPress theme filter to make their search easier and they choose whichever Wordpress theme they like best after looking through all the free templates – and there are many to look through – so, it is quite likely one will find exactly what one likes, without having to worry … Read entire article »

Are spammers from another planet?

Gee, we simply cannot believe what some spammers think we are going to allow through on this blog! Are spammers from another planet? Don’t they get it? Or are all these ridiculous blog spam comments coming from some automated system? If so, who invented these automated systems? Absolutely ridiculous! Or is all this spam from desperate people employed by legitimate companies or businesses or people trying to get their blog or site linked to from all over the Internet. If so, they (the people that did the employing) need to check on what the people they employ and pay are doing! (Besides giving their business a bad name!) If people are being paid to leave blog comments all over the Internet, they should be excellent writers who know what they’re doing, … Read entire article »

If looking for do follow blogs I have do follow on my blog now

Even with the risk of getting more spam comments on my blog (as if I’m not getting enough already!) I have decided to activate do follow on my blog. I guess I can always deactivate it later if it causes too many problems, but what I amhoping for is that it encourages some more decent comments too. Hopefully at least a few people will see the reward in commenting on a blog that allows do follow links in the comments, and leave decent, appropriate, lengthy comments that will help the findability of my blog. We help each other. For South Africans in particular, this blog is already easily found on Google.co.za for many search terms, so now that I have activated a do follow links plugin, there is yet another reason to … Read entire article »

The CommentLuv blog site searcher is ready!

It’s awesome news that the CommentLuv blog site searcher is ready, and I tried it out last nite ComLuv What it means is you can type in a search word or phrase and a list of blogs come up in the results just like when you search for something on Google – the results look like the usual ten per page results you get on Google – but with a difference! The blogs that come up are CommentLuv enabled (if you don’t yet know what that means it means when you comment on a CommentLuv blog post, and tick the CommentLuv box, you get the title of your last blog post (and it can link to it) displayed directly beneath your comment! You can get some excellent more detailed information about how … Read entire article »

Why do people spam?

I get an unbelievable amount of spam comments in my moderation queue – well maybe it’s not unbelievable – I’ve only had this blog since the beginning of July, making me quite new to blogging, so perhaps it’s normal for spammers to leave up to 50 spam comments for me per day. Luckily I use Akismet, as well as moderate all comments. I do sometimes read through the comments before deleting them, just in case I feel I could give some of them the benefit of the doubt and let them through, but it’s not often I let any through. Another reason I sometimes read through them is that they’re often quite amusing. I find it amazing that people believe I will allow some comments through. I get asked if this is … Read entire article »

A warning to people who pay people to comment on blogs

Do you ask for the URLS of the blogs they comment on? Do you check those blogs to see if the comment actually appears? Do you PAY people without checking that they’ve done the work properly? Do you make sure that they are leaving comments related to the post, and that the comments are unique and not just copy and paste? I get so many comments I don’t let through my moderation system because they’re either the exact same comment I’ve seen elsewhere, sometimes even in my moderation queue, or the comment has absolutely NOTHING to do with my blog post. You’re wasting your money paying people to comment on blogs if you’re not checking that they do it properly. Rather spend money on hiring somebody once a week to help you out in … Read entire article »

How to get more comments on your blog

I believe in rewarding visitors who leave decent comments on my blog. What do I think a decent comment is? To me, a decent comment is when: the comment is more than just 10 or 20 words; the comment relates to the post; the comment offers advice or further answers to any questions or problems the post mentions that all visitors to my blog can make use of; the person commenting tries to use correct grammar; the person commenting is polite and friendly. How do I reward good blog comments? I try to find time to also comment on the person’s blog within a few days; I try to remember to revisit blogs I like, and whose owners have commented on mine, to comment again; I have do follow links enabled meaning that the person’s name is clickable and leads to … Read entire article »

We’re currently no.1 on Google.co.za for web design!

Four days ago, (15 August 2009), we decided to check how we were doing on Google.co.za for the search phrase “web design.” And there we were, at no.3! We checked again the next day and we’d moved up to no.1! Out of over 300 million results! We’re not sure when last we checked, probably at least a month ago, when we weren’t even on the first ten pages. A month ago or so, we were there for other search terms, on page one, but longer ones such as “web design photography writing” – or see which others too, on our blog post Reasons why leaving a comment on our blog might be good for you, but not just for two words being two words we’ve been striving to be found for! We’re really pleased! But also … Read entire article »
