The planned BURN production of Kevin Knock at the Guild Theatre in East London
Words supplied by Kevin Knock, summarised and edited by Teresa Schultz
Burn is a multi-media theatre and dance production planned for East London in 2010 which will have the purpose of raising public awareness of the dangers of fire, the impact of fire upon individuals and communities, and the hardships burn victims face, and is the concept of Kevin Knock, an East London local. Burn will be staged at East London’s Guild Theatre.
Kevin Knock is concerned that one rarely sees burn victims despite the fact that there are many victims of burns and fire in the Eastern Cape, particularly in the informal settlements where there is real danger due to the use of paraffin stoves and candles.

Fire takes a hold where there is a kind of poverty that gives so many of us no choice but to live in danger’s path. Fire explodes and destroys where there is the kind of ignorance that sees so many of us needlessly courting danger.
We seldom see these burn victims: are they just too horrible? Must they be kept where terrible things are hidden? With fear? With loss? With shame?
And they carry this burden in silence. They carry it on their skin as a mark of terrible misfortune. Surely, we should share the burden?
Instead of pretending they don’t exist, shouldn’t we carry them in our hearts?
We hope to start a fire in your heart: a flame of knowledge that will grow into the fire of compassion. And so we will conquer. We conquer because one more person – you – will be aware of the dangers, will be careful, will be alert. A safety net is built one link at a
time.
And what of those already homeless, maimed, or blinded by fire? Can we not make their lives a little less painful?
As a fire dancer, Kevin notes that for some people fire is an entertainment, while for others it is a negative life changing experience.

Sponsorship is required to make the Burn production at the Guild Theatre possible.
Goals, objectives, and outcomes:
To raise awareness of the dangers of fire, particularly in the informal settlements;
To raise funds to donate to those less fortunate than ourselves;
To promote and market the production of Burn to a wide audience, thereby raising awareness of fire dangers and the effects of burn
injuries upon victims;
To provide employment for local artists, dancers, and actors.

Extra note from Teresa Schultz:
What can the general public, who can’t afford to help with sponsorship, do to help Kevin – and ultimately help spread the awareness of fire dangers and the issues burn victims face?
They can make sure they buy tickets to see the show.
They can make sure the show is a success by helping market the show, and the cause behind it, to people who may be able to offer
sponsorship to make it all possible.
