How to write and sell your own ebook

You have knowledge you’d like to share, and earn an income from.

The immediate obvious choice is to write an ebook and sell it. It’s a good immediate obvious choice, and you can sell plenty of ebooks.

But where do you start?

You start with planning what you’d like to appear in your ebook. How many chapters should it have? Are you going to include pictures?
It’s a good idea to include pictures. These can be photos you’ve taken yourself or from a photographer you’ve hired. Or you could
include illustrations or sketches, or even a bit of both.

Take notes on what you’d like to include in the ebook, and then get started, writing it.

If you need to hone your writing skills, then read up on various writing tips first. Or just go ahead and write it, and trust your instincts
that it’s going to look and be good, but if you’re in any doubt afterwards, you could always hire a writer to edit it, or even rewrite it for you.

Perhaps, in particular, make sure the writing on your splash page, or advertising of the ebook is up to scratch, and does the job of drawing viewers to either your splash page, or from the splash page to actually ordering the ebook.

A good place to write your ebook would be in Open Office – download the newest version for free from openoffice.org and start writing.

Once completed, click file, click export as pdf, click export, and you’re done!

If you prefer to write in Microsoft Word, once done, save it, then open it in Open Office, then click file, click export as pdf, click export, and you’re done.

There are generally two main options for methods of selling your ebook:

You can sell your ebook from your own website or blog by having a splash page (or “squeeze page”) that highlights what’s in the ebook. If your website or blog consists of quite a few pages or if you have quite a few websites or blogs, you can also include a small “teaser” on each page that links to the splash page. Try make at least some of the “teasers” different from each other, with a different image, or different words, so that a viewer does not tire of seeing the same thing all over the place.

Include some eye-catching images and some bold print in your splash page. You may need to hire a web designer to help you create the splash page and get somebody to help you design an ebook cover. Or browse the Internet for free ebook cover creators to download. Here is a simple example below (it’s not a real available ebook, just an example of a cover design):

Tell your viewers how the book will benefit them, and in what way you think it is unique from other ebooks on similar subjects. Offering something for free is a good idea too – this could be as simple as offering a mere 5 page extra report, or perhaps, for example, included with a recipe and cooking ebook you could offer a method or ideas on how to make money with all the goodies you’re going to be cooking up or baking in your kitchen.

You can also offer a money back guarantee if the buyer feels they are not happy with the contents of the book.

You may also want to consider including resell rights with the ebook, as that means the buyer does not only get great information on a
particular subject, but can also make money from reselling copies of it. This might end up as your buyers doing all the marketing instead of you doing it yourself, and how fabulous is that?

Include a link to email you, and you can then send the buyer your banking details. Once they have paid, you can either email them the
ebook, or give them the link where they can download it themselves. (It would have to be hosted on your website server for the download option – but keep the link secret.)

The second main option available to you to sell your digital product, is to use an affiliate site like Clickbank. You still need your splash
page that viewers will browse through, but this time it will include something like a “buy now” button, and a buyer is taken to a page
where they can pay for their new book. You don’t have to worry about the design of the payment page, as Clickbank takes care of that.

If you want to go the Clickbank route, sign up and follow the instructions.

What’s great about Clickbank is that thousands of people will be selling your ebook for you. You don’t have to worry about the marketing.

Using Ebay is a good option too.

I don’t like the idea of eBooks…because once downloaded, the first buyer can just forward it to whoever he or she feels like…resulting in loss of revenue…

  6. Nice site and good information. Thanks for covering this topic so in depth.

  7. I extremely enjoyed this! I would have to say this is an awfully informative post that deserves mentioning elsewhere.

    Dear Terry and Tony,

From the quality of your Blog and forthrightness, I feel that you are the kind of poeple I would like to do business with.

I have an ebook that I can offer with resale rights. It is also about writing an ebook in a easy way. I do not have the time at this point, nor the skills to sell the ebook online myself.

If you are interested I will JV with you and offer 60 % to you for selling the ebook. Another approach is if you design the site for me and host it including the organic marketing. Depending on the start up costs we could discuss your getting a commision per sale of the ebook from what will then be my site.

If this is succeessful , I do have a number of other quality ebooks and software, including membership software that I could share with you to upgrade my online endeavours over time. I actually am doing this to get my wife started online as she is a housewife Reiki Master. My full time job has now overtaken my many years of online research endeavours and I do not want to waste good quality money making products.

Look forward to hearing from you soon so that we may engage in what can be a mutually beneficial business relationship.

    God Bless!

    Rajesh

  9. Terry and Tony says:

Hi Rajesh and thank you for the message and offer.

The website design special we had unfortunately ended yesterday – where, had you just piad for hosting and domain registration, you could have gotten a three page site designed for free (as long as you were happy with one of the three homepage templates we would have designed for you, without needing any alterations to the design, and had you provided the logo, header banner, images, and text content yourself.) Our standard price for a basic html site like this is just R200 per page, which is still very affordable, and includes some basic organic SEO.

We will have to decline your proposal of a business relationship related to your ebook, providing and designing a site for displaying info about your ebook, and the marketing of that site in return for a percentage of sales. We unfortunately do not have the time to risk an outlay of work, or pay for hosting, for a book that will only sell as well as we can spend time on marketing it. We do not have that time. If we had the time, we would consider spending that time on creating and marketing an ebook or two of our own.

However, there may be other people who are interested in this kind of business relationship, and we hope you can find the right person to assit you, and join you in this business venture. We do also suggest you try Clickbank, where thousands of people would be marketing your ebook for you, so that they, Clickbank, as well as yourself all earn from the sales. (Read through the blog post again to read about where we mention Clickbank.) Another place to try is http://freewebdesign.co.za/howfreeworks.php – a place that designs and looks after your site for you, in return for a commission on the sales you make.

    Good luck!
