Things to remember when writing website content or advertising text

Although images can tell a whole story all on their own, when it comes to websites or blogs, one needs some written content there too, that search engines can find for people who are searching for what you’ve written about.

Writing is everywhere. Everyone reads.

Don’t get yourself a business then do nothing about it. Advertise what you do or sell with writing, and not just images. When using a lot of images on your website, or even just one, be sure to use alt tags on each image, that describe the image further to help search engines find your content, or at least have some descriptive text nearby.

Although grammar and spelling should be mostly correct, don’t fill your page with jargon or terms that the average man on the street may not understand. Speak to your potential client or reader as if you are speaking to him or her face to face.

Be positive about your product or service, telling people why it would be good for them to use your product or service, but don’t over sell yourself, or make promises you know you may not be able to keep.

Use testimonials and show or link to portfolios.

How does your service or product benefit people?

Write articles for your site or blog related to your product or service.

Let’s look at a flower shop for example. Some article topics (that people might be searching for, and then discover you, and contact you) could be:

What is expected of a flower delivery driver?

What to do with old flowers

Best places to set up a flower shop

Decorating your home with flowers

Easy flower arranging tips

Growing flowers

Growing flowers to sell

Different kinds of flowers

Items to add to a flower bouquet gift

What to write in a flower bouquet gift card

Have clear details about how to contact you, and also preferably how long it takes for you to provide a service, and how long the actual service might take.

The bottom line is to make it as easy as possible for potential new clients to want your product or service, and to contact you.

Also, do not use long boring paragraphs. Paper and website page space is not that expensive that you have to try and squash everything up close together. Spread your writing out, making it easier and more interesting for people to read.

Advertising is not that difficult. Just think a bit, and create!

:) The nice thing about writing for the web, or even just for your clients, is that you don’t have your language teacher standing behind you with a ruler smacking you every time you make a mistake.

Be yourself, write naturally, and your message will get across far better.
